Mercedes has directed multiple productions in the past focused on the universal theme of time. She utilizes Anne Bogart's Viewpoints with a sound design to create character driven pieces on stage which range from abstract to realism.

Based on the portrait opera Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson. Mercedes utilized similar melodies, rhythms and minimalistic style as well as Einstein driven subject matter in this comedic portrait operetta based on composer Philip Glass.  

Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman

Einstein’s Dreams is a theatrical experiment directed and adapted by Mercedes Inez Martinez, based on a 1992 novel by Alan Lightman of the same name.  It explores the question, “How are the artist and scientist alike?”; examining the need and obsessive drive to seek out the answers to life’s questions with the human imagination. Utilizing the text, music, and Anne Bogart’s “Viewpoints,” Ms. Martinez hopes to explore Einstein’s “Theory of Relativity” through the various perspectives of time and space an audience experiences.

Mercedes utilizes the sound design program Qlab and her knowledge and skills as a musician to integrate diagetic & non-diagetic sound into a production without overpowering the text.
